Brand Ambassador : STEPHANIE SCOTT

FLY on a little WING
— Jimi Hendrix

Steph's love for headwraps warranted a visit with us where she could devour our entire collection in the privacy of our pop up store. After selecting her first headwrap, Steph was hooked and soon returned for a second taster teaser.

Instead of wearing the traditional hat to the annual race day celebrations here in Brisbane, Steph opted for her headwrap much to the delight of race day visitors. Steph not only wore her crown with pride, but she captured the eye of many admirers.

When Steph was given the mood board for our latest collection, she rummaged through her wardrobe and teamed HEADWRAP ZIG with this smart, casual outfit. The transparent bodysuit was the ideal touch to complete this look.

This year, we decided to approach our photoshoots very differently and also wanted to showcase a bigger section of our multicultural society. We resorted to social media to spread the word that we were seeking a new batch of brand ambassadors.

Needless to say we were inundated with applicants and after a splendid meeting with Steph, we decided that she was the right fit for our brand.

HEADWRAP LAEEKAH was teamed with a white ruffled off-the-shoulder top to emphasise the bright, bold colours in this design. Orange tassel statement earrings complete this look.

Steph's spontaneous laughter and endearing personality is irresistible. Our photoshoot sessions turned out to be lively, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable as this diva stepped up to the mark as our new brand ambassador.

As is the norm, we sent Steph some questions to get to know her a bit better. Her musings were recorded as follows.

DH : Tell us three things about yourself.

Steph : Whanau (Family) – I come from a big extended family and I love it. My whanau will always be the most important aspect of my life. Travel – I am a true Sagittarian, I love travelling and have never stopped since my parents sent me on my first adventure at 21. Samba no Pe – This Brazilian dance gave me a new passion, taught me to love myself more and gave me balance in my life.

DH : What do you do in your spare time.

Steph : Whether it is dancing samba or kizomba, spending time with my family or catching up with friends. My spare time is always spent filling my soul up with good vibes.

DH: Stand-out moment in your life ....

Steph : There are many moments which have stood out, however I am proud that I chose to run my own race. I lived in London in my early twenties, travelled the world, kick started this year by participating at the world renowned Rio Carnival and have recently got engaged to the love of my life. Who knows where the rest of the year will take me.

Aviator sunglasses and a TOPKNOT styling technique was the ideal match for HEADWRAP RETRO, stylish but yet able to compliment any casual look.

DH : Do you have a favourite fashion designer or fashion icon? Why? How would you describe your taste in fashion.

Steph : I don’t have a particular fashion icon or designer, however I really dig a lot of my friends' styles, in particular my friend Phoebe who has a keen eye for fashion. She can turn a holey t-shirt into a statement piece and she knows how to dress her curvy body shape to make any plain black & white outfit look like a runway piece. My fashion sense is a mix of casual cool to playful, sexy, curvy going out wear. I love white and denim or super poppy brights – really depends on my mood.

DH : What’s your favourite place to chillax in Brisbane? Why?

Steph : Not quite Brisbane, but my favourite place to chillax is Byron Bay. I love all the chill vibes here, the cool live music scene and just the awesome vibe. If in Brisbane, you can find me having brunch in the Brisbane café scene or bursting my creativity bubble at GOMA or at The Powerhouse.

Steph looks stunning in HEADWRAP FREEMA and as you can tell by her huge grin, she thoroughly enjoyed rocking our crown.

DH : Who do you admire the most?

Steph : I admire all the women in my life. I come from a very strong female family (My mum, sister, aunties, cousins. etc.) and all the women in my life are super creative, strong, passionate and all round just amazing. These women, each and every one of them influences my life in their own way.

DH : What advice would you give your younger self.

Steph : I am grateful for all my life experiences. I have lived a full and blessed life to date, however if I could give my younger self any words of wisdom it would be. Love yourself more, appreciate the good and the bad, and take more chances!

DH : Complete the sentence "When I wear my headwrap ...

Steph : I think of all the women before me who have worn their headwrap. I think of the traditions, patterns, colours and history in each style. I feel powerful, strong and proud. I stand with my shoulders back, head up and confident. My headwrap can transform not only my style but my inner self. Above all, I feel like a Queen.

Brand Ambassador : MELISSA G

Do to others as you would have them do to you.
— Luke 6:31

We first met Melissa - she prefers Mel or Melli - when she attended one of our headwrap workshops. Her spontaneity, genuine warmth and contagious laugh was an instant hit with attendees. Mel's keen eye for styling a headwrap caught our attention throughout our workshop. At the end of our workshop, it came then as no surprise when Mel was chosen as the overall winner for best headwrap, makeup and accessory styling!

Mel teamed our headwrap POP with a lace off-the-shoulder matching skirt and top. Black heels, earrings from our favourite jewellery store Lovisa and a raffia fan complete this chic look.

Mel is an extremely busy professional who moved to Brisbane due to a career advancement. So initially we hesitated to invite her to join our team due to her busy work schedule. However, this year, we decided to approach our photoshoots a little differently. Our aim was to create a more efficient session concentrating more on the headwrap than the complete outfit. So we explained this to Mel in an email and at the same time we extended our offer of being one of our brand ambassadors. Mel's response came back with a resounding YES PLEASE!

Headwrap ISHA ... Mel was the ideal brand ambassador to rock this crown infused with our favourite colours, red, black and gold. Tassel earrings and ring from Lovisa Jewellery compliment this sophisticated look. Black lipstick from the Nyx Cosmic Metals lip cream range was the ideal choice to complete this styling.

Despite Mel's hectic work schedule, she still finds time to do the fun stuff. Let Mel give you some insights about where she's at in life.

Let's start with ...

Tell us three things about yourselfI'm a proud woman of colour. I love my culture. I'm constantly pushing the boundaries so that I can grow and evolve in all facets of my life.

What advice would you give your younger self : To both my younger self and currently evolving self, I'd say "Do something every day that is solely for me, myself and I. Always make time for me so that the tank never runs dry."

A popular headwrap style is the TOPKNOT. Our headwrap SPECTRO was the ideal choice for this style which Mel of course owned. Our moodboard called for retro sunglasses, colourful earrings and Nyx cream lipstick in a bold red for this themed photoshoot.

Do you have a favourite fashion iconQueen Latifah. As a young girl, it was very uncommon to see curvy women in positions of influence. Queen Latifah has revolutionised this look. Over time, she has evolved and her ability to look stunning in her own skin has always captured my attention.

What are the standout moments in your life : Hmmm, it's hard to choose from so many. I'm going to have to say the very first time I arrived in my homeland Samoa. It was so very special. I immediately felt my whole being was where it was supposed to be. Connected and re-centred, ready to tackle anything the universe threw my way.

This is headwrap JABULANI ... bold, colourful, infused with shades of blue and a hint of yellow. Yellow coral tassel earrings and nude Nyx lip cream was all Mel needed to make this design pop.

Where's your favourite place to chill in Brisbane : Any place where there is green grass, shady trees and a view of the water. I really enjoy connecting with Mother Nature, and the water always gives me a sense of peace.

What do you do in your spare time : You'll find me enjoying great food, going on a new adventure, discovering another part of our beautiful country, or learning a new skill.

When you wear your headwrap ... I feel like a boss. I feel confident. I feel sassy. I feel empowered to rock my crown audaciously!

Sadly, Mel will be relocating back to Sydney soon. We will miss her but wish her success and fulfilment in her career and life in general. It's been a real pleasure having her on board.

NOTE : Headwrap, wardrobe styling, mood board, creative director, photography is the work of our owner/founder Charmaine.

Brand Ambassador : YENENESH NIGUSSE

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.
— Marianne Williamson

Yenenesh or YENI for short, is a dear friend of my daughter. They've shared many a wonderful memory together both socially and as dancers, here in Australia as well as on the international scene. After a stint overseas, Yeni is once again based in Brisbane. Once I heard that Yeni was back, I wasted no time in asking her to join our brand ambassador team. I was thrilled when she agreed because Yeni needs more than 24 hours in a day to achieve her daily goals!

Yeni looks stunning in our limited edition African bazin headwrap design. We've named her TURQUOISE and teamed her with earrings from Melbourne based jewellery designer Ovazania.

Yeni has a wicked sense of humour, a big heart and brings so much enthusiasm to our photoshoots. An accomplished dancer, Yeni oozes charisma and boldly flaunts her very own fashion style influenced by her ethnic roots.

So. What is this diva all about? Here's an insight into what makes Yeni, Yeni.

DH : Tell us three things about yourself.

YN : I LOVE to dance. I have a crazy sense of humour. I HATE injustice.

DH : Do you have a favourite fashion designer or fashion icon? Why?

YN : I don’t strictly have a favourite designer or icon. My main influence in fashion comes from traditional African fabrics and designs teamed with a contemporary twist. I also admire our local street, urban and high end fashion designers particularly the diversity they have to offer.

DH : How would you describe your taste in fashion.

YN : It’s a continual experiment! My favourites are the basic colours ... charcoal, grey, black, white ... combined with a splash of colour and teamed with eye-catching accessories.

The lace skirt and top is from H&M. The headwrap is from our SS17 collection. These also happen to be Yeni's favourite colours.

DH : Who do you admire the most?

YN : My aunty.

DH : What advice would you give your younger self.

YN : Don’t listen to naysayers, particularly those who have implied that you would never be good enough. You are beautiful, intelligent and can achieve whatever you want in life. Only YOU have the power to limit yourself. Strive to be the best you can be and don't heed the negative influencers.

DH: Stand-out moment in your life ....

YN : Going back to Ethiopia for the first time ever. Locating my Ethiopian family and reconnecting with my ethnic roots - an amazing moment and an unforgettable experience. I cherish these memories every day and I'm forever grateful for the significant opportunity.

YN : I work on my creative ideas, always keen to try something new or spend quality time with my nieces and nephews.

DH : What’s your favourite place to chillax in Brisbane? Why?

YN : Orleigh Park in West End. It’s quiet, right beside the Brisbane River, and has an abundance of trees. I love nature and finding a peaceful spot to think and reflect.

DH : Complete the sentence "When I wear my headwrap, I feel …
