Brand Influencer : FARO MUSODZA

It must’ve bloomed overnight . . . unlike HUMAN BEINGS. We take TIME.
— Faro Musodza

This year we have been fortunate to work with brand influencers based in the USA, Sydney and Melbourne.

We’re stoked to introduce Faro who hails from Melbourne.

Faro and I have known each other since she modelled our head wraps on the runway in 2014 at our first runway show (in Melbourne). I was captivated by her energy, her enchanting smile plus the fact that Faro sported extremely short hair, challenging for styling head wraps! This was the ideal brand influencer combination so without hesitation, we invited Faro on board.

Our crepe head wrap TANGERINE drapes beautifully - Faro decided to style it with a simple back knot, leaving the ends free.

We see our brand ambassadors/influencers as individuals who willingly share their love for our brand with enthusiasm and honesty. We would love for our supporters/customers/followers to get to know the person under the head wrap.

So.

Let’s get to know Faro a bit better . . .

DH : Tell us three things about yourself.

FM : My full name is RUFARO but I prefer the shortened version . . . FARO. My name means HAPPINESS in the ChiShona language (of Zimbabwe). I am many things - actor, shoemaker, nurse but most importantly of all, I am Mudiwa’s mother. I’m also a Virgo!

DH : Who do you admire the most?

FM : People who find their purpose and focus on it despite the challenges. Whether it’s mental, physical, financial or all of these, they still wake up and go for it. I’ve learnt that life can truly drag you down. But you’ve got to have the determination and willpower to do the one thing you love no matter how small it may seem. Trust your instincts and allow it to be your intuitive inner compass. Your energy will always propel you forward. But we’ve got to learn to trust that energy and allow it to direct us.

Our ankara head wrap designs are very colourful. Faro did a wonderful job of teaming our head wrap SHASHI with an equally colourful outfit.

We all can agree that fashion and women go hand-in-hand. Adding a head wrap will embellish any outfit. We quizzed Faro about her taste in fashion.

DH : How would you describe your taste in fashion.

FM : I am often drawn to items that are first colourful and feminine. Then I consider how these would shape my body. I often go for sporty looks for on-the-go lifestyle or relaxed and effortless but nevertheless head turning. Then there’s the goddess look . . . just add sultry to amp it up!

DH : Do you have a favourite fashion designer or fashion icon? Why?

FM : This is ever changing. Lately I’ve been choosing to buy material and personally work with a seamstress to work on a design of my choosing. With the current fashion and sadly, body trends, I have difficulty to find items that are a great fit and also affordable. Oftentimes I find myself buying high end items and having a seamstress take it in to fit my shape. Doing my own designs has been liberating.

Head wrap SHASHI : Faro has given her styling a nice twist (no pun intended) by teaming SHASHI with a block colour top and simple hoops.

On matters relating to life . . .

DH : What advice would you give your younger self.

FM : Move at a much slower pace. Take your time. And ask as many questions until you truly understand what is being said. There is power in knowing. Continue to love yourself, you got you!

DH : Stand-out moment in your life …

FM : The love of my life gave me call last year in September. Had not seen or spoken to him in a decade and half. It’s been unreal . . . am still trying to calm down.

What about Faro’s social activities.

DH : Where’s your favourite place to chillax.

FM : Chillaxing in the Motherland aka Zimbabwe. It’s unsettled at the moment but it’s home. You will always find moments and places that harmonise with your whole being, and that remind you why you are here. It’s also truly the only place I’m able to unwind fully whilst someone looks after my son.

DH : What do you do in your spare time.

FM : I try to sleep and recharge as much as I can. I also dance a lot especially if I feel sluggish or restless.

DH : Complete the sentence “When I wear my head wrap I feel . . . “

FM : Regal!

Faro can be found on social media and goes by the handle Faro Musodza. BTW, did we mention that Faro has starred in the short film ‘Blackwood’ , a comedy-drama exploring the African Australian experience in small town Australia.

We thank Faro for her time and we look forward to welcoming her on board as a brand influencer for another term.

Brand Ambassador : AGNES ZENA

I’m the one that has to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to.
— Jimi Hendrix

Always on the lookout to showcase a bigger section of our multicultural society, we resorted to social media to spread the word that we were seeking brand ambassadors.

Needless to say we were inundated with applicants one of whom was Agnes. After a few false starts we finally got to meet. At our initial meeting, we did most of the talking while Agnes listened attentively. Her serious demeanour had us wondering if she would be the right fit. But then Agnes smiled. And we were smitten.

Agnes wears MARINE SPLASH (sold out) from our tiedye headwrap collection teamed with her handmade raffia earrings. Like our headwrap, the earrings have been dyed using environmentally friendly natural dyes.

For our very first photoshoot, Agnes came on board as a solo brand ambassador. We were excited to see how she would 'show off her crown' in front of the lens. Any concerns were unfounded. Agnes, was a natural!

Braids are great when styling headwraps. The thinner ones particularly as they contribute to the overall styling technique. Agnes wears our tiedye headwrap MINT SPLASH (sold out) teamed with handmade raffia earrings from Yanbalala Arts.

We had just tiedyed a brand new batch of headwraps. When we discovered that Agnes was the owner/founder of Yanbalala Arts, we immediately approached her about a collaboration - her raffia earrings teamed with our headwraps turned out to be the ideal combination!

Agnes is not only a savvy femalepreneur but her weaving skills and creativity is next level. She dyes all her materials using only natural dyes before weaving these into an extraordinary collection of colourful, bold statement raffia earrings and accessories.

Our latest collection of ankara headwraps had just been completed and we were super excited to work with Agnes again. We managed to set up another photoshoot just in time before she decided to get her new set of braids done. Her naturally curly hair was great to style and added so much more pizzazz to the photoshoot.

So how does Agnes feel when she wears her headwrap? Flashing an attractive smile Agnes says "I feel like ROYALTY." Indeed she is. We welcome Agnes to our tribe of Queens.

To capture the essence of royalty, we styled our ankara headwrap BEHATI in a high turban. Agnes teamed BEHATI with a strapless pants suit, creating a chic and elegant look.

So what's this diva all about? Agnes unabashedly shares some insights about herself ...

I'm an Indigenous small business owner, possibly an alien and an empowered BLACK woman. I'm my own style icon. I try to juxtapose contemporary looks with cultural influences thereby creating my very own flavour.  However, I do admire Erykah Badu for her crazy, cool and fearless fashion sense. Women and femmes of colour that I choose to surround myself with, inspire me. They are the ones that bring LIFE to this world. Being a femalepreneur and earning my way through life doesn't leave me much time to rest so in my spare time, you can find me catching up on my (beauty) sleep. Or creating art anywhere I choose. The standout moment in my life was watching my niece being born. Giving birth is the scariest and most beautiful thing to witness. I'd tell my younger self that "We go through different cycles in our lives. Acknowledge that and stay strong, one day you'll grow up to be a badass Queen."

You can find me in Meanjin, on planet Earth or at Yanbalala Art.

NOTE : Meanjin (pronounced Mee-AN-jin) is the aboriginal word in the Turrbal language for Brisbane. It means 'spike,' and was the name for the finger of land on which central Brisbane sits.
